What is a Concussion?
Concussion is trauma-induced alteration in mental status that may or may not involve loss of consciousness.
Acute Signs and Symptoms of a Concussion
Symptoms that can occur within minutes to hours after a concussion:
- Confusion
- Amnesia
- Loss of consciousness (not always)
- Headache*
- Nausea & vomiting
- Dizziness and imbalance*
Symptoms that occur within hours to days after a concussion:
- Trouble walking
- Memory/attention problems*
- Trouble sleeping*
- Vision changes
- Mood changes*
Managing Concussions
Most concussions do not need treatment and get better on their own, but it may take some time. Here is a list of things to do to help heal your brain after a concussion:
- Rest your body – get sleep, avoid strenuous mental and physical activity
- Do not drink alcohol while you are still experiencing symptoms
- Treat headaches with anti-inflammatory medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) and or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
Return to Usual Activities
Depending on the sport or activities you participate in, it may be necessary to refrain from participating until your symptoms resolve. You may be able to return to activities when:
- You have no symptoms without medications for 7 days (1 week)
- The activity may be increased as the symptoms subside in a gradual progression
